Java certification exams will be offered through a new test delivery partner – Pearson VUE – and will no longer be available through Prometric and this will be effective from June 1, 2011, .

Pearson VUE (http://www.pearsonvue.com) provides computer-based testing for information technology, academic, professional and government testing programs around the world. It has secure network of test centers in around 165 countries.

Some important points to be considered:

    For those, who are planning to take an exam on/after June 1: Registration will begin at Pearson VUE on May 16, 2011 for all scheduled exams on or after June 1.
    If you are currently registered to take an exam with Prometric or planning to take an exam on or before May 31: You can continue to register at Prometric through May 23, 2011, but you must complete your exam by June 1, 2011.
    If you currently have a Sun or Oracle exam voucher or exam retake voucher: All vouchers will still be valid through their original expiration date and will be redeemable with Pearson VUE starting on May 16, 2011.
    Exam Titles will remain same with the exception of Master Downloadable Projects.
    Exam numbers will be changed for all courses as Pearson has its own convention.

Also, you can get access to 50-70 free practice questions on Pearson’s website for 30 days. During this time you may access the practice questions up to 3 times.

Oracle / Sun Java Certification - Ways to show it off

I'm a certified Java Developer. Is my certification with Oracle or Sun?

If you were certified on Java prior to 1st Sept., 2010, then you still hold a Sun-branded credential. The Sun branded credential is still 100% valid and fully recognized under the Oracle certification program. If you desperately want an Oracle-branded Java certification, you need to upgrade to the latest release. For example, someone who holds SCJP 1.4 certification could upgrade to the Oracle Certified Professional, Java Programmer certification for Java SE 6. If you got your Java certification after Sept. 1, 2010, then it's a Oracle-branded certification.

  • Write code to define, instantiate, and start new threads using both java.lang.Thread and java.lang.Runnable.
  • Recognize the states in which a thread can exist, and identify ways in which a thread can transition from one state to another.
  • Given a scenario, write code that makes appropriate use of object locking to protect static or instance variables from concurrent access problems.

  • Develop code that implements tight encapsulation, loose coupling, and high cohesion in classes, and describe the benefits.

  • Write code that uses the generic versions of the Collections API, in particular, the Set, List, and Map interfaces and implementation classes. Recognize the limitations of the non-generic Collections API and how to refactor code to use the generic versions. Write code that uses the NavigableSet and NavigableMap interfaces.
