SCJP | SCWCD Books--Must and Should Books to prepare for SCJP and SCWCD

As of my experience, one can crack SCJP with the help of few books and materials.
Kathy sierra and khalid mughal are the two best books to crack SUN certification.
If you want to have in-depth concepts, go for Head First books.
I strongly recommend those books to acquire complete knowledge and to get maximum score.

I suggest the dumps also but without preparing these books, dumps alone can't do anything.

I had the links to those books try them.

SCJP Practice Tests By Kathy Sierra

Top 5 Reasons That Make SCJP Certification Exam Tough

1.You are not in reality of the exam preparation
Most of the time preparation for this certification exam is approached in the conventional style especially the way you did preparation back in school and college days. However the reality of this exam is that you are no longer in school or in college (some exceptions maybe there) you are in a full time job and you have to manage job responsibilities and also are going to study after a break. Hence the preparation approach must be also different.

Solution : Plan ahead
Rather than beating yourself up for not studying the way you did earlier design a new approach as the circumstances are different now. Make a study plan keeping the reality of the current circumstance in mind.

2.You only prepare theoretical aspects of the exam
The SCJP exam now-a-days having more coding questions. Small code snippets are given and either with compilation errors or code logic errors need to be answered.

Solution : Practice practice practice...
SCJP questions can be best answered if you have done hands on programming in Java and if not then you will need to practise many such questions that give you exposure of coding. Look for mock tests/sample practise tests that have you practise a lot of coding.

3.Preparing Alone
Preparing for the certification exam alone is a trap you will never be able to study alone as you have never done that in school/college etc you had your entire class friends preparing with you.

Solution : get a group of committed people to take the exam with you
Get a friend/colleague or register in a Java forum to belong to a group of people and prepare along with them. Not only will it be fun but it" also give you the required competition and keep you on your toes.

4.Nothing happens over night
You might have heard of this great person in your office who passed the exam in 1 week or 1 month and now you are impatient as to how long it will take for you to be certified. You plan for 1 month and soon the plan goes to the dogs so now you are really impatient and in your mind you have made it a very tough exam that will take lots to pass.

Solution : Build brick by Brick
Don't try to learn the entire language in a week/month, take your time. Keep the objective of learning and not just somehow passing the certification exam. Learn "why" something works a given way, not just that it works one way. This will surely see you long way in your journey as a Java professional.

5. Am I ready to take the test?
This is a tough one to answer. And exam will always be an exam meaning it will always give butterfly in your stomach and make you feel like throwing up the moment you think of taking the exam.

Solution : Don"t be guided by you feelings
Here again I will point to the first point, keep in touch with the reality of your exam preparation. Let the scores in the practise tests/mock tests guide you whether you are ready for the exam or not. If you are scoring 85% + in the mock tests do go take the exam.

Java---Points to Remember

A java Source file can contain any number of public classes but utmost one class can be declared as "public".

What is the difference between Interface and Abstract class ?

Lets first analyze the definitions of Interface and Abstract class then we will proceed to the differences.

Interface
In general, from client point of view Interface is the set of services what he is getting.
And from service provider point of view, it is the set of services what he is offering.

A Java interface defines a set of methods but does not implement them. A class that implements the interface agrees to implement all of the methods defined in the interface, thereby agreeing to certain behavior.

Definition: An interface is a named collection of method definitions (without implementations). An interface can also include constant declarations.

Abstract Class

An abstract class is a type of class that is not allowed to be instantiated. The only reason it exists is to be extended. Abstract classes contain methods and variables common to all the subclasses, but the abstract class itself is of a type that will not be used directly. Even a single abstract method requires that a class be marked abstract

The Main Difference Between the Abstract Class And the Interface are:

1)When inheriting an Interface, we have to inherit all the methods of that Interface.. there's no other option. Where as with abstract classes we can inherit the members that we are in need of.

2) An Interface cannot have any declaration within it. Just the interface has to have body of the method and the method is to be used by the classes inheriting it. Whereas in case of Abstract Class it can have declarations (Other than the abstract method) and it can be further extended in the classes inheriting the Abstract Class.

How is the SCJP 1.6 exam different from the SCJP 1.5?

There exists some considerable differences between SCJP 1.5 and SCJP 1.6. Lets have a look at those >>>

* Exam objectives: Several new API classes/interfaces have been added: java.io.Console, java.util.NavigableSet, java.util.NavigableMap. Explicit garbage collector calls (i.e. System.gc()) will no longer be tested, but candidates will still be expected to understand garbage collection and the finalize() method. Also, the following topics will be tested in greater depth: exception handling, collections, assertions, threads, and flow control. See the SCJP forum for more details.
* Number of questions: 72 (no change)
* Time: 210 minutes (increased from 175 minutes)
* Passing score: 65% (increased from 59%)
* Format of questions: No change.

The Importance of Sun Certification--SCJP

Importance of SCJP

SCJP certification is really very important for any programmer who wants to touch the optimum of growth. It holds importance not only for working professionals but also for students who will work in the near future in the software industry.
For any professional who is currently working in any organization seeks to grow as much as he can.
But due to some real bad diplomacy and politics the hard working professional cannot get what he deserve. Here comes importance of being certified by any renowned organization like SUN. If you hold the certification you will be advantageous for any role for which you are applied.
and also your bosses start hearing you more patiently and give proper attention to you.
The certification also makes you earn more since it makes you more capable than your peers. So, obviously you will be provided with much higher designation.

For Students it is also really very important to earn some industry capable knowledge so that they can outperform their peers. It not only earns them good knowledge but also helps them in grabbing most of the campus offers made by companies. Since companies don't want to invest too many in giving training to freshers they prefer guys with sound skills. But it is important to note that as a fresher they will earn only starting post of any organization. The certification becomes handy in case if you have some experience in that field. So students work hard it will surely help
you being confidant and make you answer technical questions in a more sound manner.

Why Should I Take An IT Certification? How It Will Be Useful?

SCJP Details---Details of SCJP Course
Be it the boom time of the late 90's or the downturn after the dot-com burst, IT Certification has been an area of constant growth. In recent times, due to the slowdown in the IT industry, more and more people have lost their jobs. The requirement for skills has gone up and to stay above water in such a competitive environment, an increasing number of people are making efforts to earn certifications. According to MCP Magazine's annual survey, following are some of the reasons why people are taking certification so seriously.

Skills and Knowledge
The most important benefit of certification is that the process of certification increases your skills and your knowledge to a great extent. Majority (65%) of the certification holders feel that acquiring a technical certification has made them more confident in their jobs and the work they perform. More than half (52%) feel that technical certification has improved their problem-solving skills on the job, and half of them feel that their technical certifications have increased their overall job productivity.
Job Security
More than three-fourths (79%) of the professionals having IT Certifications plan to pursue additional certifications in the coming year. So, despite the IT market slump, lost jobs, and cut wages, a vast majority of IT professionals will continue to seek additional certifications. And the key word is "additional" - for a typical certification holder already had nearly 4 technical certifications and had been attaining a new certification every year.
In the face of this down market, why are these certification holders seeking additional technical certifications? It is best expressed in two words: job security. In the boom times, one constantly reviews the rate of growth in salary as a key personal-success measurement. However, during the down times, job security is paramount. While the return on investment (ROI) one receives from a technical certification in terms of salary increases is always important, the role of the certification in keeping one's job becomes the crux issue during the down times.
More than half (59%) of the certification holders said that they feel more secure in their current jobs due to their certifications. And more than two-thirds (69%) feel that technical certifications play at least some role in their job security.

Money!!
31% of the certification holders received a job promotion within the first year of receiving their primary technical certification. One can argue whether a technical certification plays such a major role in receiving such promotions, yet 92% of the certification holders who did receive promotions feel that their primary certification played a significant role in that promotion.
Nearly half (43%) of the certification holders surveyed, received a salary raise within the first year of receiving their primary certification. 80% of certification holders feel that their raise was significantly due to their certification. The average certification holder who did receive a raise within the first year of earning a primary certification realized a healthy 19% increase. The average certification holder realized a 7% raise within the first year of receiving a primary certification. The average certification generated a $3,487 increase in salary.
Another economic factor that certification holders consider is Return On Investment (ROI). ROI from certification is integrally tied to the cost of the certification. In 2002, the average technical certification cost $1,100 and generated a $3,487 increase in salary. That is, the average certification provides a 3.2-to-1 ROI. That is, for every dollar invested in a certification, the certification holder realizes a $3.2 return in the form of a pay raise.

Respect
Another most important non-economic aspect of certification is on-the-job respect. 58% of the certification holders surveyed, feel that they get more respect from managers and colleagues due to their technical certifications

Career Opportunities
Despite the IT downturn, and relative job scarcity, certification holders jumped companies after acquiring certifications in their desired fields. 16% (lowest till now) of the certification holders jumped companies within 6 months of receiving their primary certification.

Entry
Whether you're new to the IT industry or a seasoned professional, IT Certification makes you more marketable and gives you the credentials to land your dream job. It is extremely difficult these days to enter your chosen field without the relevant degrees and work experience. It is a catch-22 problem "you can't get the job if you don't have the experience and you can't get the experience if you don't have a job. " Certification is one of the most powerful ways to break this cycle and get an entry into the field of your choice. An ever-increasing number of people are using certification as a tool for solving the problem of getting an entry in their desired fields.

Java Certification : Which one should you take?

Sun has identified 3 job profiles for those working with Java. You can choose the profile depending on your current working domain or the domain you wish to diversify into. Programmer: Anyone who has a basic understanding of Java (Standard Edition) and can write code for well-defined design applications can be a programmer and the corresponding certification is SCJP.

SCJP: A Sun Certified Java Programmer uses J2SE technologies to demonstrate the programming competence on Java platform.

Developer: An SCJP having good knowledge of design principles and competence to apply them to develop large software applications can be a developer. The certifications that can strengthen the career path of a developer are SCWCD, SCBCD, SCMAD and SCDJWS.

SCWCD: A Sun Certified Web Component Developer develops J2EE applications using web components.

SCBCD: A Sun Certified Business Component Developer develops business applications using EJBs and J2EE technologies.

SCMAD: A Sun Certified Mobile Application Developer is an experienced J2EE/J2SE programmer who has diversified into the mobile applications development arena.

SCDJWS: A Sun Certified Developer for Java Web Services has a standard level of proficiency with web services, as well as with the Java technologies that support web service.

Java Certification : When should you think of it?

Learning a technology and working on a technology complements each other. Learning a technology gives you the overview of how things need to be done. And working on a technology helps you understand the in-depth details of getting work done using that technology. Most of the time, when you are working on a project you cover certain specific areas of technology required in that project. Java has evolved from being a language to develop platform independent client application to providing the architecture for developing N-tier enterprise application. It is important that you keep yourself updated with all the changes so that you are not left behind with obsolete systems. Taking certifications and update exams is a structured way of updating yourself with the technology. Therefore you should think of Java Certification from the day you decide to work on it.

Certifications Offered by SUN MicroSystems

Since its inception in 1995, Java technology has grown in popularity and usage because of its true portability, and so has the esteemed Sun Java Certification. The Java platform allows you to run the same application on different operating systems.
Sun Certifications are well recognized in the developers' community. Sun has a range of certifications starting from the entry-level Sun Certified Java Programmer (SCJP) to high-level certifications such as Sun Certified Enterprise Architect (SCEA). The new Sun Certified Web Component Developer (SCWCD) title is one of the hottest emerging certifications in the industry (it barely missed making it to the CertCities' list of the 10 Hottest Certifications for 2003). Perhaps one of the reasons why Sun Certifications are so popular is that the exams are generally viewed as fairly challenging. Sun also offers Sun Certified Mobile Application Developer (SCMAD) Certification, which tests your skills in the wireless technologies.
Keeping up with the technological developments, Sun now offers Sun Certified Developer for Java Web Services (SCDJWS) Certification exam. It certifies developers who create web services applications using Java technology components such as those supported by the Java Web Services Developer Pack and the Java 2, Enterprise Edition 1.4 platform.
